  1. What is the difference between Tagalog and Filipino?

If you say that Tagalog is different from Filipino, then, how will you answer the questions below:

Is this sentence a Tagalog sentence or a Filipino sentence: “Si Resty ay mabait.”?

If this is a Tagaog sentence, what is its Filipino translation?
If this is a Filipino sentence, how will you say this in Tagalog?

    • I don’t see any difference between Filipino (the ‘educated Manila Tagalog,’ as defined by Isagani R. Cruz) and Tagalog (the language spoken in the Tagalog region outside of Manila), to justify, in linguistic terms, the separation into two languages. Isagani Cruz claims that ay-inversion sentence is a characteristic of Tagalog but not Filipino. Read his article here, and, let’s discuss his arguments.

From my point of view then, the sentence “Si Resty ay mabait” is as much Tagalog as it is Filipino, and so is the equivalent “Mabait si Resty.” (Which, incidentally, is true.)

  2. Question for Isagani Cruz:

85% of English words today are borrowed from other languages. How come it is still called English?
